Collection of Special Items

Household Products
For household products that cannot go into the curbside recycling program or in landfills, there are several ways to dispose of these materials through programs organized by SWANCC, the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County.  Arlington Heights is a member community of this regional, intergovernmental agency. As a member, Arlington Heights residents are provided with  a variety of waste management services, programs, and resource materials that include collections for special materials that are not allowed as part of curbside recycling or should not go into the garbage due to toxicity or recoverability (reuse and recycling).  

There are a variety of drop-off locations and programs offered through SWANCC for the collection of electronics and other items waste items that cannot be placed in landfills. Materials that can be recycled through SWANCC: 

  • Rechargeable household battery recycling
  • Compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) Recycling
  • Document Destruction Events
  • Electronics Recycling
  • Holiday Lights Recycling
  • Mercury Thermometer Disposal
  • Prescription Medications & Sharps Disposal
  • Residential Chemical Waste Disposal

The Village also offers special collections of CFL bulbs and other items at the following locations: 

Health & Human Services 
Health & Human Services in the Village of Arlington Heights, 33 S. Arlington Heights Rd., accepts rechargeable household batteries, CFL bulbs, eye glasses, ink cartridges, mercury thermometers, and thermostats during regular business hours. Rechargeable batteries must have masking tape on contact points to reduce risk of fire. 847-368-5760.

The Senior Center 
The Senior Center, located at 1801 W. Central accepts sharps disposals from medications during regular business hours. Starting January, 2019 , prescription and over the counter medications can be taken to the Police Department, 200 E. Sigwalt Street, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
